Where I am right now is in the planning stages. I am working with Tim Lapage at Safari Experts on the first part of our world travels. It seems right to start in Africa which was the starting place of Sam's first big international trip. 5 years ago we took a family trip to Kenya and Sam was in his element serving with the ME TO WE organization helping build a secondary school and loved seeing all the animals on Safari.
There are many aspects we are working on from school- Boston School. They are going to work well with us as we make the world our classroom. Trying to find good books to read for Africa, Egypt, Jordan and UAE. Any suggestions? What about good movies? We have watched Invictus- that made us decide we want to go to Robben Island for sure and see a Rubgy game.
There is medical. Shots- need to look into those and need to see if the Typhoid pills Sam choked down when we went to Africa are still good and do we want to be taking Malaria pills again for the two months we will be in Africa?
There are visas- don't think we need any for Africa, but will for the other part of our adventure.
There is the question, what is driving our trip? What do we hope to get out of it? As of now, it is a desire to see so much more of the world that our God created. To see the people, the landscapes, the animals, the natural wonders, to smell it, taste it, hear it, be in it and appreciate the divinity in all things. Then to learn from it, what is different, what inspires, what saddens us, what can we learn, what can we share,... expand our minds, expand our hearts, give, take, share,...
We plan to do at least a week of service on each of the three sections of our world trip. Our first part we are planning on working in Tanzania at the base of Mt. Kiliminjaro for two weeks with Cross Cultural Solutions. We know that through this experience and working with children in a local school and other projects they are assisting locals in their community that we will get to know the people. That is the biggest blessing of humanitarian service is knowing the people you serve, and in return they serve you by opening their hearts to us. I am looking forward to that.
I am picking places that I have always wanted to see because of these many wonders and beauty and the people and history that lies in these places. I also want to grow my faith through this adventure. I want to learn about people's customs, their stories, share mine. I want to learn of other's faith and customs. I plan to attend a variety of LDS Church's around the world and strengthen my kinship with people of my faith around the world on the Sabbath. I would like to visit LDS Temples and bring Sam with me to see them, a symbol of my faith and a place where we can go and do sacred ordinances. On our trip to Africa, the only one we will be able to visit is in Johannesburg. Sam and I both will bring our temple recommends with us so that we can visit temples around the world.
