December 2, 2014 (New York City, USA)

Today we took the subway downtown and saw the 911 Museum and Memorial. It was so moving.  It is such an interesting event, since it touched millions of people’s lives. Everyone knows where they were when 911 happened. Nathan was there in NYC when it happened and I had been talking to him on the phone when the second tour fell. It was the week I found out that I was pregnant with Sam and Nate was stuck in NYC and ended up getting a rental out of the city and driving west to get home. I remember so many friends stories of being downtown and then all the photos that Nathan had taken at Ground Zero the day after the incident when a Congressman had seen that he had a digital camera and asked him to take photos of him at Ground Zero. Nathan’s photos are so moving and incredible, honestly better than most of the photos they had at the museum, taken 24 hours after the crashes. But when I saw the large foundations that are inverted that flow down I was moved to tears. It was moving to remember that day and moving to see the triumph over such tragedy. As we walked through the museum, I kept getting choked up with emotion about how I felt that day, how I mourned as a fellow American with all those Americans that were in NYC and around our country.  They did a remarkable job of capturing and displaying items that we all remembered from the attack- from fire trucks to pieces of bent steel to photos that were sketched into our minds forever.

As we went into the room that had photos and the stories of all those that were victims, I searched out one of Sydney’s good friends from High School whose father was killed in the attack. To click on his name and read more about him and about Syd’s friend and hear her voice, it all struck me and was so choked up to think how this act of terror altered people’s lives forever. It was a moving morning.

After we headed uptown to visit my friend Marjorie Levy, who I haven’t seen in almost 20 years. I had totally lost touch with her and found her on facebook a few years ago. She was one of my best friends my Senior year in High School and we did so many fun things together back then. I have missed her and it was such a treat, worth coming to NYC for, to be able to reconnect with her and tell stories and hear about her life. It is like when  you are in high school and you wonder what will happen to your friend. I had heard nothing about her life, what she did for work, where she lived,… I had a million questions and was so happy to hear her life story really and I knew she would be an incredibly interesting and energetic person and was happy to hear it all. She has lived and experienced and suffered and succeeded in so many ways over these past 20 years. My heart was so full, it was more than I could almost take feeling like I had missed her life, but now I can pick up from here. Just love her, her energy, her kindness and just down to earth vibe. She made us lunch in her apartment and it was such a treat.

Marge pointed us towards the Natural History Museum and we headed that way to see the Shark IMAX and checkout the museum. It is just so huge it would require weeks  really but we got to see North American exhibit, Dinosaurs, Marine life, and the Shark Movie. After the film and some more exploration of the museum we took the subway towards Nike Town. Sam was in heaven and we sent 1.5 hours there. We dipped into FAO Schwartz because you just have to at Christmas with a little boy. Sam loved it and there was so much to look at and try out and play with. We looked at the windows at Bergdorf’s because they are just so beautiful, artwork unto themselves. We went to a restaurant that Marjorie had suggested TAO and it looked great but when we went in Sam was just too exhausted so we Yelped a tasty Pizza place close by and decided after Sam was so good about letting Marge and I get caught up that the evening would be about him and we left and went for Pizza. An eventful day, totally exhausted and fell asleep ten times updating the blog tonight, as well as Sam who passed out mid sentence. NYC there is never enough time for all that there is. Tomorrow we head to DC. Lots to see and do there.
