Caught a very early flight from Lisbon to Malaga. Checked into the hotel that Sam's school was staying at and the drive there it was feeling very Ocean City, MD or other overcrowded beach cities. The hotel was honestly not great but right next to a full boardwalk that went for several miles both directions along wide beaches loaded with beachgoers and overlooking a huge marina. Sam's class was spinning the day at Grenada's The Alhambra. I had tried to get tickets but you have to purchase well in advance. Last week there were no tickets for the day. Instead I had been in contact with some friends from Park City. Drew and Katyja Cain. They too are spending the year traveling the world. They started in March and began in Italy and have been to Slovenia, where Katya is from, and now were in Spain about 30 mins from Malaga. It was so fun to meet up with them and have time to catch up. We walked the boardwalk and settled on a small restaurant on the sand where we sat and talked for over 4 hours. It was so fun to hear about their adventures and share some of mine and talk about favorite spots they are going where we have been and learn more about their photography they are doing. I have only one group of friends that have done what we have so it was fun to talk about the ups and downs and the unexpected and the planning that goes into the trip.
After the Cains left and headed to Seville, I found my way through the Marina, passing dozens of restaurants, and parking myself on a lounge chair on the beach. I am not going to lie, I was a little taken back by honestly a quarter of the women were topless. All kinds of shapes and sizes and ages and I don't think I have been anywhere with so many topless women. I didn't embrace going "local" but enjoyed the sun late into the evening before I headed back to see if the kids had arrived at the hotel. Right when I got back to the hotel they had just arrived. We all grabbed dinner together. Fun to hear the kids talk about all they had done that week and see Sam so happy being with his friends, but nice that he was also happy to see me. So appreciate his teacher Jessica for organizing this and for her mother for being another chaperone.
