We left Weltvogelpark early and headed right for Frankfurt. Our goal was to get to the only temple that is open during our visit to Europe. The other temple is under renovation and Paris isn't finished yet and Madrid will be closed for a summer renovation. So we wanted to continue our temple visits and work and needed to make it to the LDS Frankfurt temple by 1:30 p.m., when they would let us come in to work, a time assigned for families.
We arrived a bit early and loved seeing this temple. A totally different feel than the rest, set in a neighborhood in a smaller town before you get to Frankfurt. It has a beautiful old rennovated home on it and a sprawling campus that has housing for other visitors and a ward building. This temple serves many of the Eastern European countries and Poland. This would have been Kendall's temple when she served her mission in Poland. They have housing for families and those that come far distances to serve in the temple.
We grabbed some lunch at a little Chinese restaurant and then made our way to the temple. There were about 10 youth there and a couple of parents. I had a nice visit with one of the women who was originally from Utah but married a German man and they have raised there 3 children here outside Frankfurt. She was really lovely and wonderful to visit with. It was a nice experience in the temple and then when we were done we said our goodbyes and made our way to Bamberg.
Bamberg was where Sam's grandma Elouise's grandparents were from who had 15 children and had moved to America when the grandfather was around 37. Their family had a stained glass making shop here in Bamberg and had done some of the glasswork in the prominently featured church on the hill overlooking town, right above the hotel we checked into.
The town is as simply charming as anything you can imagine. We explored last night and just couldn't believe how beautiful it all is with the geranium filled window boxes and perfectly painted medieval village with bridges and a river flowing through and bridge towers that are beautifully painted and topped with lookouts and copper covered turrets. It is just spectacular, right out of a Disney film again. The whole historic town is part of a World Heritage Site preserved as a beautiful example of a medieval village. We loved exploring and it was filled with people and people all on the bridges having drinks watching the sunset. We love Bamberg!! We look forward to exploring this town and family sites tomorrow.
