October 14, 2014

We have been out for a proper month now, we left on September 14th. So much we have seen and done and learned. Today we left the hotel and took a ferry over to La Digue. It is a small island a 15 min ferry from here. When we got off we got a map, a bicycle and then headed out to explore. We passed some incredible beaches, which we pulled off and took a dip in one before hopping on our bikes and making our way to a Heritage Park. The first thing we came across were the Giant Turtles. They were truly giant!! They were the size of a stuffed arm chair and they were alert and seemed almost social. If you would lean in, they would come close and reach their head towards yours almost as if to say hello. We are totally captivated by them. We found a table that looks like they chopped up some banana leaves and fed to them and took the extra’s off the table and gave them. They are just like they are in slow motion. There was no rush to grab the food or eat it but just reached ate in slowly and sauntered on.

Farther down they had a huge grove of Vanilla Bean plants. I have never seen Vanilla Beans being grown. The vines were growing along upright posts and there were tons of them, all the bases were covered in cracked coconut shells, which I need to ask someone why. Father down the trail we heard some crazy noises that sounded like animals screeching at each other. There aren’t any monkeys or baboons on the island but we came around the corner and there were styes of pigs. HUGE pigs. It felt like a nursery rhyme. They were hanging over each other stalls like they were chatting with each other. Not going to lie, made me feel badly about how much I love bacon. It clearly wasn’t a place where pigs were pets. They were being washed down and the pigs I couldn’t tell if they liked it or not. Cute piglets were also out and about. Think a pig could be a fun pet… African parrot and a pig?!!  By this park we went over to the beach. Just spectacular! The sand is white and there is a little scenic island just off the beach. Swam there for a little and it was just like we were in a postcard.

We found a restaurant for lunch that served Pizza. Sam was so excited to have some pizza and I had a fruit plate and some asian potstickers. After lunch we headed out to the other side of the island and found a beautiful beach with these monolithic stones that look like stone henge. They look like from a Disney set, they are so picturesque and perfect. We hung out in a protected pool of water and cooled off and enjoyed the warm clear blue water. We moved to a couple other beaches too and enjoyed just wading out in the ocean. It was so relaxing and just beautiful.

We returned the bikes later in the afternoon sun crisped and salty and boarded the ferry back to Praslin. The ocean is pretty rough and grateful to be on a large catamaran ferry and up top where the wind blew. Back at the hotel we hopped in the refreshing pool and then showered. Tonight we are going to the Relais and Chateuax restaurant that is a set menu and overlooks the end of the island up on the cliffs. We had scoped it out yesterday and had made a reservation for tonight. We are not taking the Moke, we exchanged for a small Kia, still stick but easier to drive and we can lock up our things in the car too if we want to go to another beach and swim. Tomorrow we will go scuba diving in the morning and then settle into our new accommodations at Raffles and be able to enjoy this spectacular hotel and its great views and rooms and the largest pool on the island with it’s own small private island too that we will try and get over to and snorkel around. Looking forward to mixing up our accommodations and location, as we will be on the stiller waters on the other side of the island.
