October 3, 2014

This morning we packed up early and Rachel took us to the airport. We dropped the boys off first at school and then rally raced to the airport. At the airport there was literally no one there. Their domestic airport looks exactly like what National Airport in DC used to look like but with no lines and honestly i thought it was closed. I have never seen such a quiet airport in my life. Sorry Rachel for having you race to the airport but it was sure fun :) We said our goodbyes to Rachel. I feel like I have found a kindred soul, friend that I will always admire in her. She has inspired me the way she lives her life, by the spirt and for others.  Sam and I will both miss her.

We arrived after a short flight on Air Zimbabwe to Victoria Falls. Met by our super friendly guide from Love for Africa, we asked him about was there a zip line or something other than a bungee that we could do over Victoria Falls. He said yes, so after we checked into our Kingdom Hotel, which Tim Lapage you were right- we should have delved out the extra money for the Victoria Falls Hotel :) The room was fine, but probably like the other hotels and all of Zimbabwe, the electricity goes out all the time and I am typing this blog in the dark right now ;)

We walked across the bridge to Zambia, one more country :)! and signed our lives away as we chose to zipline from Zambia to Zimbabwe across the Victoria Falls gorge and over the Zambezi River. It was awesome. Sam and I walked back over and picked up our video, Sam took a GoPro and took a video of him shooting across the gorge.

Right near by we did the 3 km walk along Victoria Falls. We are in dry season right now so the water isn't at full capacity but the good thing is that we can see the falls. Often during the rainy season there so much water, which creates so much mist that you can't see the falls. There were many viewing areas and it was all spectacular. Parts where the water was really rushing it bounces back up from the gorge and comes down as what feels like rain. There was a beautiful rainbow too that came from the mist over the waterfall. It was very very hot during our viewing hike so when we hit the mist, it felt great.

For dinner we went to the Victoria Falls and enjoyed a really spectacular dinner buffet and dance show. The costumes were incredible and elaborate as regional traditional dances were performed. Sam delved into some crocodile and some sushi- sushi was excellent which is surprising that in Zimbabwe they could make it so authentically. We walked back to our hotel and just crashed. We were a bit nervous about malaria and mosquitos since it does exist here. We sprayed ourselves and tried to wear long sleeves, but it was still so hot in the evening I had to take my long sleeved sweater off. Hoping for the best. Have our "Peaceful Dream" mosquito spray all over us ;)
