This morning it was so nice to sleep in. In the middle of the night Sam woke me up to walk him to the bathroom since the generator is shut off at night and the room in the woods was pitch black. As we were walking back I flashed my flashlight outside and a monkey screeched. It was a bit shocking and Sam was not having it. He snuggled up against me since now we were heightened to all the animals around us and we could hear them all over.
The morning was great to just sit and look outside the tent from the bed and just relax. We headed to breakfast at 8 am before loading up in the Land Cruiser for a long day in the car. We joined Iso our guide and headed back out. We started with a herd of elephant in our road that didn't want to go anywhere except where they where and they were a bit testy too. We got past them and headed near the water. There there were literally thousands of flamingo swarming the skye. It was so cool. They would fly in a mass swarm and then land. We walked out onto a dock they have over the hot spring where all the flamingos were feeding in the waters. We saw dick dicks, lots of elephants, tons of baboons, some vervet and blue monkeys, gazelles and impalas, and some rollers, and bee eaters, hornbills and other birds. We enjoyed lunch overlooking the plains and then headed back towards Arusha.
On the way we stopped at a Maasai market, which I was bummed that our guide said no pictures. I understood, but it was really cool scene with everyone bringing their goods from corn and beans and flour to sell and you could buy goats, as well as oils for your skin and fresh vegetables. It was the place to be. Many of the people there were friendly and some came to give us the friendly handshake of shake, brother grip, shake. We headed out a little further and stopped at a curio shop- we just didn't have the energy to bargain and so got a cold drink and then walked over to the snake park. Yvette opted out of this outing and Sam and I went in. It was feeding time and we saw many snakes including the Black Spitting Cobra ready to eat their lunch of two very cute chicks :( Saw another snake choking down some mice. There were several crocs there and monitor lizards too. It was a nice break to get out of the car.
Back on the road it is just so interesting to see what is happening outside the window. There are people walking everywhere and big herds of cows and goats being herded by small children, women,... There are little pop up vegetable markets here and there. I included a few photos below of what we were passing by. When we returned to Kananga and our home base we were so tired and hot and ready to be back at our place. The heat and all the driving had taken it out of us. We all mustered the energy to shower and then went to bed around 8:30 p.m. Big week of teaching school and we have a waterfall outing on Tuesday.

Happy early birthday to SYDNEY!!! Happy 20th Syd!! We love you and are thinking of you today. xoxo
Saying goodbye to our treehouse. It was awesome!
Typical to see a Maasai along the road or in the desert without anyone else around
Passed countless people with their herds along the road- here seeking shelter from the heat today- SO HOT!
Are we over driving yet?!
Just one of countless popup markets along the roads
Our guide Iso took good care of us this weekend
Huge flocks of flamingos were swarming around - so beautiful to watch them in motion
Swallows just hanging out on the railing leading out to the hot spring
Dick Dicks- mini antelopes
Tsete flies were everywhere today. Clearly a problem in this area since they have these banners that are dipped in poison and they attract the flies and then when they hit it they will then die shortly after
Elephant Road Block
Snake Park!
mamba nearly ready to finish off his lunch of the two baby chicks :(
This wounded bird was just so beautiful
