October 21, 2014

Today we had our first real day of teaching. We had stayed up late and I woke early to finish our BINGO boards. We had ones for the older kids that had big numbers on them and we did math problems and the answers were the numbers on BINGO board. The smaller kids we had lower and upper case letters and numbers 1-12. We began the little break out class that we had with groups of 6-7 by singing the BINGO song. We then moved into the BINGO game and identifying letters and numbers and sums. It went well but we were borderline dilirious when we got to the last group after 3+ hours of doing the lessons for 20 mins with all thee groups. We began just laughing and dancing during the song. After I hung out with the little kids that stay all day and we went through my photos and movies on my phone and identified the penguins, elephants, lions,... they loved it. I was writing the problems, letters and numbers on the board and Sam and Yvette were helping the kids with identifying the letters and numbers on the board. We worked well as a team.

This afternoon after a tasty lunch of fish and rice and a couple competitive rounds of Spot It, we loaded the van and drove about 30 mins to an "Orphanage" which turned out to be a man and his wife's home that have essentially taken in 45 kids. He is a Kilimanjaro guide and it started with taking in one child that was homeless and then after 20 years they have 45 kids they look after. One time guiding the man he was guiding asked about his family. He explained that he had taken in many children and that he had many children he raised. The man was so moved he built Rosmin, the Pappa of all the kids, a home for his family. Rosmin feels like it was a miracle, since before they were living in a mud and wood home. The house was brick and had tile floors and running water and electricity. He must have also purchased him some land, since they had a block of land that they grew corn on and had chickens and goats and cows. We met the children that were there. They were all great, we sand a bunch of songs, they showed us around their home and land and then we played frisbee and soccer with all the kids. It was a fun evening and was so interesting to talk with Rosmin. He has literally saved lives of many of these kids who have just found his home. He told us of one little girl whose mother had heard that they are kind to those in need and came by and she left her daughter for dinner and never came back. That was 10 years ago. The place was not kept up well and things were dirty and the kids were dirty but they all looked happy and well fed. One of the boys that was about 20 years old was Octavius. He was so smart. He spoke perfect English. He hopes to become a guide, but hard to get a job with no training and schooling for it. I told him I would put in a word for him at the tour company we are booking with this weekend in Moshi.

After dinner Yvette, Sam and I prepared our lesson for tomorrow. We are working on days of the week and month. We have made up a board game and will teach them the song, "Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday.... then lets begin again" We will do the song and then play musical chairs with the song then play the game where they have to identify the day of the week and the month to move forward. We will agin take groups of 6 or 7 for 20 mins and rotate through all the kids first.
